The Evolution of the Smart Glasses

Updated: Mar 6, 2020

History of Google Glasses

Google Glasses (1)(2)(3) was a project that was developed by Google X as a means to create a small computer in-built into a set of glasses. They set this up to allow a heads up display format for humans to use within different settings. The first prototype was made in 2011 by the Google X division. The prototype weighed 8 pounds (3.6kg), which at the time was a very heavy set of glasses but this was due to the weight of the computer. Fast forward to 2013 they had made lighter variants of the Google Glass using metal wiring as the frame of the glasses.

First Production Models:

At the 2012 Foundation Fighting Blindness Conference, the glasses were previewed where Sergey Brin wore the prototype to show the world for the first time. Following up with that 2013, Google X released the Explorer Edition of Google Glass to the Open Public. This was the first fully functioning Google Glass that had been released. It was a platform for the developers to edit and make changes to Google Glass. It was set at a price of $1500.

After several months, 8,000 individuals working within the Tech industry as well as Media companies were invited to be the official “Glass Explorers”.They were invited to a test fitting session at Google's Headquarters in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. Most noticeably youtubers such as MKBHD or now known as Marquees Brownlee. He shot a video reviewing the Google Glass Explorer Edition. Alongside Marquees Brownlee, another famous Youtuber by the name of Casey Neistat(5) filmed an entire video using Google Glass and showing how it can be used within a day to day environment as a regular consumer.

Since then, there has been no public conferences or notices that have said that it will be brought to the masses due to the technology and production of the Google Glass still being fairly hefty in price. The project from there kind of died off and has not been a priority for Google since 2013. Now in 2019 turning over to 2020, Google has brought it back to life by announcing the new Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2.

Uses of Google Glasses:

With the new Enterprise Edition 2 Glasses, it will be aimed towards using the glasses within a Secondary Industry level. Companies such as DHL, AGCO, General Electrics and Sutter Health have been assigned to use the Glass within a real life working environment. A very good example of this was how AGCO implemented the glasses; allowing the glasses to play tutorials & training videos for the employees which in result would reduce errors made on the production line.

Similarly DHL Logistics have been using the glasses to link teams of employees together. With the sharing feature, it allows the glass to live share stream to allow a manager or team leader to assist the employees or do a troubleshoot in real-time. Looking at a comparison of the results with and without the glasses, there has been a 15% increase of productivity from DHL, 25% increase from AGCO, 34% increase from GE and 2 hours saved per doctor from Sutter Health.

History of Snapchat Glasses:

Snapchat Glasses(6)(7) or better known now as “Spectacles” are a product of Snapchat which is dedicated to recording videos. Much like how Snapchat works on a phone, it works similarly on the Glasses by using your camera lens or a camera lens to record videos and take images. First Production models of the Snapchat Glasses were leaked in October 2015. They showed the basic features and design of the first Spectacles. Following the leaks, Snapchat released the spectacles to the general public in November 2016. Following that, the Spectacles version 2 were released in April 2018.

Fast Forward to 2020, they have released their third variant, named Spectacles 3. Made from a sturdier metal frame and featuring two new 60 frame per second 720p cameras allowing for not only 2D but also 3D Video and Photo capture. On top of that they have upgraded the storage on the device to have now 4 gigabytes worth of videos and photos.

The Spectacles are aimed more for consumer use than anything else. Giving daily consumers, such as you and me the ability to record moments that happen in our lives simply through the press of a button. With the new cameras, it allows the image to have depth perception and also integrate the use of their pre-existing filters into the new circular video and photo format.
